American Frances Tiafoe, the No 16 seed, defeated Frenchman Alexandre Muller 6-3, 6-3 to move into the last 16 of the Madrid Masters at the Caja Mágica on Tuesday.
Tiafoe, ranked No 17, will play Italian Matteo Arnaldi next.
Ahead of his victory, the American benefited from the abandonment of Italian Luciano Darderi (7-5, 3-1).
Muller, ranked No 39, benefited from the abandonment of Belgian David Goffin (6-3, 3-6, 1-0) and edged out No 21 seed Ugo Humbert (6-2, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5)) earlier in the tournament.
