Madrid Masters: Zverev sweeps final eight games to beat Carballes Baena in three sets

Germany’s Alexander Zverev, the No 13 seed, moved into the third round of the Madrid Masters by defeating Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 6-7 (6), 7-5, 6-0 at the Caja Magica on Friday evening.

Zverev, ranked No 16 in the world and is a two-time former champion in Madrid, lost a tight first set in a tiebreaker during which he held a setpoint. The second set also went down to the wire until 5-5 from where Zverev won eight games in a row to complete the victory in three hours and 25 minutes.

The German meets French qualifier Hugo Grenier, who upset 22nd seed Sebastian Korda in another second round match.

In the previous round of the Madrid tournament, Carballes Baena, ranked No 53, won against Belgian David Goffin (6-4, 6-4) while Zverev received a first round bye.
