Metz Open: Mayot reaches first ATP quarter-final

Harold Mayot edged out Gregoire Barrere 7-6 (2), 2-6, 7-6 (5) on Tuesday evening and will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No 4 seed, and Austrian Dominic Thiem in the next round

Qualifier Harold Mayot moved into the last eight of the Metz Open by edging out Gregoire Barrere 7-6 (2), 2-6, 7-6 (5) at Arènes de Metz on Tuesday evening.

Mayot, ranked No 176, will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Ugo Humbert, the No 4 seed, and Austrian Dominic Thiem next.

The 21-year-old entered this week with one ATP win to his name, and has never reached a quarter-final before.

Harold Mayot edged out Japanese Yosuke Watanuki (6-4, 1-6, 6-4) in the previous round of the Metz tournament.

In the first round of the Metz tournament, Barrere, ranked No 85, won against German Yannick Hanfmann, the No 7 seed (7-6 (5), 6-4).
