Lorenzo Sonego, the No 6 seed, advanced to the last 8 of the Metz Open by beating qualifier Abdullah Shelbayh 6-3, 7-5 at Arènes de Metz.
Defending champion Sonego cruised through the opening set before being pushed by an impressive performance from the Jordanian.
Ultimately, though, the sixth seed had too much quality for Shelbayh as he reached a second consecutive quarter-final in Metz.
Sonego, ranked No 49, will play Italian wildcard Fabio Fognini next.
Ahead of his victory, the Italian edged out American Marcos Giron (2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3)).
Shelbayh, ranked No 215, won against Frenchman Hugo Gaston (7-6 (5), 6-2) in the previous round of the Metz tournament.
