American Taylor Fritz, the No 3 seed, beat Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No 27 seed, 7-5, 6-3 to reach the last 16 of the Miami Masters at the Hard Rock Stadium on Monday.
Fritz, ranked No 4, will play Australian lucky loser Adam Walton next.
In the previous round of the Miami Open, the American won against Italian Lorenzo Sonego (7-6 (2), 6-3).
Shapovalov, ranked No 28, edged out Argentinian qualifier Thiago Agustin Tirante (6-3, 6-7 (1), 7-6 (3)) in the previous round of the Miami Open.
