Rublev stunned by “emotional” Bergs in Miami Masters second round

Belgian Zizou Bergs defeated Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 8 seed, 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the third round of the Miami Masters at the Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday.

This was Bergs’ first win against a top 10 player and he remembered his grandfather who passed away a couple of years ago on this day while he faced Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis (lost 4-6, 6-3, 7-6) in the opening round in Miami.

“Honestly, I don’t know what to think yet,” the Belgian said during his on-court interview. “It’s just a very emotional day for me, my grandfather… he died two years ago on this day. I was playing Kokkinakis here, I lost 7-6 in the third. Afterwards, I went to the locker room and got the news. So today, a top 10 [win] is amazing.”

Bergs, ranked No 51, will play the winner of the match between Italian Matteo Berrettini, the No 29 seed, and French lucky loser Hugo Gaston next.

The Belgian won against Portuguese Nuno Borges (7-6 (2), 7-5) ahead of his victory.
