Top seed Zverev holds off Thompson to reach last 16

German Alexander Zverev, the top seed, advanced to the last 16 of the Miami Masters by winning against Australian Jordan Thompson 7-5, 6-4 at the Hard Rock Stadium on Monday.

Zverev, ranked No 2, will play the winner of the match between Frenchman Arthur Fils, the No 17 seed, and American Frances Tiafoe, the No 16 seed, next.

The German defeated qualifier Jacob Fearnley (6-2, 6-4) ahead of his victory.

In the previous rounds of the Miami Open, Thompson, ranked No 37, edged out American Marcos Giron (3-6, 6-4, 7-5) and beat Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, the No 28 seed (7-6 (4), 7-6 (1)).
