No 9 seed Daniil Medvedev edged out Karen Khachanov 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 to advance to the second round of the Monte-Carlo Masters at Monte-Carlo Country Club on Monday.

In Medvedev’s first Masters 1000 event without a bye since 2019, the Russian had to dig deep against his fellow countryman.

Leading 5-1 in the first set, the former world No 1 looked in complete control and in impressive form against a tricky opponent. However, typical of clay court tennis, it isn’t over until it’s over – with Khachanov’s improving serving numbers resulting in a closer contest.

They split the first two sets, 7-5 for Medvedev and then 6-4 for Khachanov, before a deciding set which seen six breaks of serves finished with a shot marginally wide from the latter.

Medvedev, ranked No 11, will face Frenchman Alexandre Muller next.
