Upsets continue in Montreal as Popyrin beats Shelton

Australian Alexei Popyrin defeated American Ben Shelton, the No 11 seed, 6-4, 7-6 (4) to advance to the last 16 of the Montreal Masters at Stade IGA on Thursday evening.

Popyrin did not face a break point at all across the one hour, 39 minute match. He also played much tighter tennis than Shelton, hitting just eight errors compared to Shelton’s 15.

Popyrin, ranked No 62, will face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the No 7 seed, next.

The Australian won against Tomas Machac (6-3, 6-4) in the previous round of the Rogers Cup.

In the first round of the Rogers Cup, Shelton, ranked No 14, beat Kazakh Alexander Bublik (7-6 (4), 6-2).
