Alexnader Zverev completed the perfect week as he won his first title of 2025 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Ben Shelton in the final of the Munich Open on Sunday.
The German, out of form since reaching the final at the Australian Open in January, had a perfect day on serve, not facing a single break point as he wrapped up his 24th career title.
It was the perfect way for the German to celebrate his 28th birthday, the win giving him a third title in Munich.
“It’s extremely special to win in Germany,” Zverev said. “To win tournaments in Germany is one of the most special things I can do, I think. It’s definitely a good birthday present to have.”
Perfect serving from Zverev
Shelton had played brilliantly throughout the week but the left-hander could not make any impression on Zverev’s serve, only once taking him to deuce.
The German also mixed up his game nicely, finishing the match with a fine drop shot and then a backhand volley winner. After failing to get past the quarter-finals of any event since Melbourne, his win was the perfect response to his critics.
“I knew I had to play my best today,” he said. “Ben’s been playing extremely well all week and the conditions here suit his game. They suit my game too. It’s a perfect start to my birthday, to be fair.”
