ATP - Rome : Schwartzman ATP – Rome : Schwartzman

No matter that Diego Schwartzman lost to Daniil Medvedev at the Rolex Paris Masters on Friday. The world No 9 got the help he needed.

Schwartzman clinched the eighth and final spot in the Nitto ATP Finals when Pablo Carreño Busta fell to Rafael Nadal later in the day. The Argentine could have locked up a berth on his own accord by beating Medvedev, but Carreno Busta had to win the entire tournament in order to remain in contention. Although the 15th-ranked Spaniard showed signs of staying alive when he took the opening set from Nadal, the world No 2 eventually prevailed 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

As such, Schwartzman will be making his debut appearance in London later this month. The 28-year-old will be joined there by Nadal, Medvedev, Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, and Andrey Rublev.

Schwartzman’s place inside the O2 Arena is well-deserved. A strong 2019 campaign put him in position (players have been able to keep many of those points due to the impact COVID-19 had on the rankings) and he has not slowed down in 2020. His fall swing includes a runner-up performance at the Rome Masters, a semifinal run at the French Open, a final appearance in Cologne, and now a quarter-final result on the indoor hard courts of Paris.

Schwartzman posted on social media after the Nadal vs. Carreno Busta match ended.
