Bjorn Borg’s son Leo earns first ATP Tour win, beating Ymer at the Nordea Open

Leo Borg defeated Elias Ymer 7-6 (5), 6-3 for his first ATP level win. He’ll face Federico Coria in the next round.

5-time Wimbledon champion Bjorn Borg’s son Leo achieved the first ATP Tour win of his career, beating fellow wildcard entrant Elias Ymer 7-6 (5), 6-3 at the Nordea Open in Bastad.

In doing so, Leo Borg – currently ranked No. 437 in the world – has moved into the second round and will take on the Argentinian Federico Coria – currently world No. 113 – in the round of 16.

Borg, still only 20, mostly plays on the ITF circuit, which is the lowest level of professional tennis. This means his weekly grind consists primarily of competing at Challenger events, with the aim of picking up enough points to improve his ranking and gain direct entry in more ATP level events.

However, playing in his native homeland of Sweden, Leo Borg was understandably handed a wildcard for the ATP 250 event in Bastad.

Borg has repaid the faith shown in him with a hugely impressive win over his fellow compatriot Ymer, a much more experienced player.

“I’ve worked so hard for this, so many years, and some days you get results and today I got a win,” Borg said after his victory.

Bjorn Borg was one of tennis’ greatest players, winning 11 Grand Slam titles – including five back-to-back Wimbledon titles – before he retired early and unexpectedly at the age of only 26.

Should Leo win his next encounter against the more experienced Argentine, the excitement around this young man will substantially grow not just in Sweden, but in the wider tennis community.
