Rotterdam Open: Monfils edges tight contest against Shapovalov to make second round

Gael Monfils moved into the second round of the Rotterdam Open by defeating Canadian qualifier Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5) at the Rotterdam Ahoy.

In an absorbing contest, the Frenchman – a wildcard in Rotterdam this week – twice had the edge in the tiebreak to seal a tough win against the Canadian, who is still playing his way back into form after several months away from competition.

Monfils, ranked No 70, will face the winner of the match between Italian Jannik Sinner, the top seed, and Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp next.
