The clay on the SuperTennis Arena is not fully ready, stated Holger Rune after his win on Friday.

In the middle of the first set of his long match against Francisco Comesana, Holger Rune complained about the surface on the Supertennis Arena, a new 3000-seat court built at the Foro Italico where the Masters 1000 of Rome is taking place.

“I think the court is really maybe not ready to be played on, actually,” Rune explained afterwards, “because there’s a lot of holes in the court.

“I just felt a little bit dangerous for the ankle. So that was why, they worked on it and every changeover. So, yeah, big respect to the guys that that did a big job for for the court, so it got better, it got more firm.”

I’m from Denmark and we do know what clay courts looks like in the April when it’s not really ready

“As I told the supervisor, you know, I’m from Denmark and we do know what clay courts looks like in April when it’s not really ready. So I I said to him : ‘I’m not like being so oversensitive or anything’. I just thought every time I was doing a slide and there were spots on a court where there was, like, a deep hole on the court, and that’s dangerous for the ankles.

“We cannot change the court in the middle of the match,” Rune concluded. “So I was just happy to get it off my mind and and find a way to fight through. We have French Open coming up. I don’t wanna risk an injury. But I would say it’s not the best court for sure. So, hopefully, I won’t be there again.”

Rune will play Corentin Moutet next at the Italian Open. Andrey Rublev, Casper Ruud and Ben Shelton are among the players set to play on this court during the second-round matches on Saturday.
