Sinner extends dominant indoor streak with commanding ATP Finals opener over FAA

The Italian won 7-5, 6-1 against Auger-Aliassime in this aborted rematch of the Rolex Paris Masters finals. Sinner has just won his 27th indoor match in a row.

Jannik Sinner’s run of matches won in straight sets at the ATP Finals is still ongoing. The winner in 2024 with one of the most impressive straight-set victories in tournament history (five), the Italian continued his streak by beating Félix Auger-Aliassime (7-5, 6-1) in his 2025 opening match, which puts him alongside Alexander Zverev in the very provisional group standings.

Undefeated indoors for two years, Sinner has just won his 27th consecutive match under a roof. His sixth consecutive win without dropping a set. The player who will put an end to this streak is surely born, but if he is part of the 2025 field, he is about to achieve an exceptional performance.

Felix’s belief

Auger-Aliassime believed for one set, the first one. In any case, he held on. He stayed level on the scoreboard, in the rallies, as much as he could, even surviving two initial set points wasted by Sinner on two forehands that landed in the net, but not enough to push him to a tie-break like in the Rolex Paris Masters final.

After dropping that set, FAA lowered his volume during the first three games of the second set. Trailing 3-0, he requested a medical timeout to have treatment on his left calf. Under pressure from the first shot, he could not keep up with the pace set by Sinner, who never slowed down.

Sinner’s serve and return still letal

The Italian, without seeming to be playing at his best level, continues to reap the benefits of his attacking start to the point thanks to his serve and return. With 89% of points won on his first serve (64% for Auger-Aliassime), and 60% on his second (38% for Auger-Aliassime), Sinner used the same patterns as in Paris to keep FAA under wraps, despite a level of play that brings Fontang’s student closer to the highest world level.

The first four matches of the ATP Finals all resulted in straight-set victories for the four highest-ranked players in the tournament: Alcaraz against De Minaur and Fritz against Musetti in the Jimmy Connors group, Alexander Zverev against Ben Shelton and Jannik Sinner against Félix Auger-Aliassime.

The Connors group (Alcaraz, Zverev, De Minaur, Shelton) will show its trends on Tuesday, and the other group (Sinner, Zverev, Shelton, Auger-Aliassime) will do so on Wednesday.
