Tommy Paul upsets Jannik Sinner to reach Eastbourne quarters

Tommy Paul defeated Jannik Sinner 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to extend the Italian’s wait for a first career win on grass

Jannik Sinner’s grass court debut of 2022 did not go as he would like have liked with the Italian falling to American Tommy Paul in the second round of the Eastbourne International.

Paul upset the second seeded Sinner 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in two hours and five minutes. This was Sinner’s first match on grass this year, having received a first round bye in this tournament and missing the first two weeks of the grass season due to a knee injury that forced him to retire during his fourth round match at the French Open.

The loss means Sinner has yet to win an ATP-level match on grass in his career, following opening round losses in s’ Hertogenbosch 2019, Queen’s Club 2021 and Wimbledon 2021.

Paul is through to meet sixth seeded Alex De Minaur next. The Australian scored a 7-6, 6-2 win over Lorenzo Sonego, of Italy.
