Flavio Cobolli, seed No.5, capped a sensational week in Mexico by defeating Frances Tiafoe, seed No.8, 7-6(4), 6-4, capturing his second ATP 500 trophy and ensuring a career-high Top 15 ranking debut on Monday.
The Italian sensation’s victory in the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC final marks a significant milestone as his first ATP-level title on a hard court. Having previously tasted ATP 500 success on the clay of Hamburg, the 23-year-old showcased his remarkable versatility and elite court coverage throughout the 2-hour and 11-minute contest.
Seeded No. 5, Flavio Cobolli became the highest-ranked player remaining in the draw after a series of high-profile upsets cleared the path to the title. The tournament’s four leading stars all suffered early exits: top seed Alexander Zverev and fourth seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina were both eliminated in the second round, while second seed Alex de Minaur and third seed Casper Ruud fell in their opening matches.
The opening set was a grueling 71-minute marathon where Cobolli’s resilience was tested early. Despite Tiafoe racing to a 3-1 lead in the tiebreak, the Italian remained composed, neutralizing the American’s power with explosive movement and a world-class running forehand.
After missing an initial set point at 5-4 on Tiafoe’s serve, Cobolli eventually clinched the breaker to take a vital lead.
Cobolli, the youngest since 2016
In the second set, the tactical battle intensified. Cobolli secured an early break for 3-2, and though Tiafoe fought back to level the set at 4-4, the Italian immediately broke back to serve for the championship. Demonstrating the “Big Foe” nerves that have defined his rise, Cobolli closed out the match with an ace to become the youngest champion in Acapulco since 2016.
The win propels Cobolli into the global elite, as he is projected to break inside the Top 15 for the first time. With two ATP 500 titles on different surfaces and a recent Davis Cup triumph under his belt, the explosive Italian heads into the “Sunshine Double” as one of the most dangerous players on tour.
