Australian Alex De Minaur reached the second round of the Toronto Masters by winning against No 11 seed Cameron Norrie 7-5, 6-4 at the Aviva Centre on Tuesday evening.

De Minaur, ranked No 18, will play the winner of the match between Canadian wildcard Gabriel Diallo and Dan Evans next.

The 24-year-old Aussie has only won three matches at the Masters 1000 level this season, but he was able to avenge a 6-3 6-3 loss to Norrie from earlier this year at United Cup in Australia. De Minaur reached the final in Los Cabos last week where he was beaten by Stefanos Tsitsipas.

“It was definitely not easy conditions out here. It was blowing a gale, it didn’t make for pretty tennis,” De Minaur said after his win as quoted by the ATP Tour. “So I think we both struggled a bit out here today, but I’m happy I was able to get the win over an incredible opponent.”
