Dane Holger Rune, the No 5 seed, defeated Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 7-6 (7), 6-3 to advance to the third round of the Toronto Masters at the Aviva Centre on Tuesday.

Rune served 12 aces to Mpetshi Perricard’s 7 and was especially dominant on his own service games, winning 87% of points on his first serve and 86% behind his second. Notably, he did not face a single break point during the 76-minute contest.

In contrast, Mpetshi Perricard, despite his reputation for a huge serve, was less effective, especially in key moments, including two costly double faults that contributed directly to losing both the first set (in the tie-break) and a pivotal game in the second set.

Statistically, Rune even edged Mpetshi Perricard on second serve points (Rune 85.7% vs. Mpetshi Perricard 57.1%). This serving performance allowed Rune to keep the Frenchman under constant pressure and ultimately secured his spot in the third round, reversing the result from their previous encounter, which Mpetshi Perricard had won last year in Basel.

Rune, who played his first match of the US season after his withdrawal at Washington, will next face Alexandre Muller who defeated Miomir Kecmanovic.

In the previous round of the Rogers Cup, Mpetshi Perricard, ranked No 45, won against Japanese qualifier Shintaro Mochizuki (6-4, 6-2).
