Vienna Open: Sinner cruises past Altmaier, records fastest win of 2025
Jannik Sinner defeated Daniel Altmaier 6-0, 6-2 on Wednesday

Italian top seed Jannik Sinner launched his Erste Bank Open campaign with dominant form on Wednesday, dispatching Germany’s Daniel Altmaier 6-0, 6-2 at the Wiener Stadthalle in what marked his quickest victory of the 2025 season, bettering his previous quickest win by a single minute, which was against Daniel Elahi Galan (6-1, 6-1) in the opening round of the Cincinnati Masters.
The world No. 2, returning to the ATP Tour for the first time since retiring from his Shanghai Masters title defense earlier this month due to an injury scare, took just 58 minutes to overwhelm the German. The victory extends Sinner’s impressive winning streak on indoor hard courts to 17 matches, including his title run in Vienna in 2023.
Sinner, who is pursuing his fourth tour-level title of the year, displayed clinical efficiency from the baseline. In the match against the World No. 51 Altmaier, the 24-year-old Italian conceded only four points on his serve throughout the entire match and did not face a single break point.
According to ATP Infosys Stats, Sinner delivered 19 winners against only seven unforced errors, demonstrating superior control and pace. He was particularly dominant in the first set, where he lost only six points and converted three of four break point opportunities to secure the bagel. In total, Sinner won 71.4% (55/77) of all points played.
“I feel like in the first set everything was working very well,” Sinner said after the match. “On indoor courts, you have to be very careful. If your opponent starts to serve well, it’s very difficult to break. But I’m very happy about today’s performance, starting the tournament in a very positive way, not only game-wise but feeling-wise.”
Sinner, who has a 43-6 win-loss record for the 2025 season, will next face his countryman Flavio Cobolli in the Round of 16. The match will mark the first professional meeting between Sinner and the 23-year-old Cobolli, who advanced by defeating Czechia’s Tomas Machac 7-6(6), 6-2. Cobolli has two ATP Tour titles to his name, compared to Sinner’s 21.
