Back on the Washington courts for the second time today, top seed Taylor Fritz was untroubled by Australia’s Jordan Thompson, winning 6-3, 6-3 to make the semi-finals of the Citi Open 2023.

Earlier in the day, Fritz had taken place in an epic arm-wrestle against Andy Murray, taking over three hours to down the former world No 1 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-4. With only a few hours rest, heading back out to play his quarter-final against No 71 Thompson was a big ask.

And yet, Taylor “The Hotshot” Fritz rose to the challenge in magnificent style. His serve remained unbroken across the match, with the American saving both break points he faced. In return, he broke Thompson’s serve three times, hitting 21 winners in the one hour, 17 minute match.

Fritz, ranked No 9, will play Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, the No 12 seed, in the Citi Open semi-finals.

Earlier in the tournament, Thompson, ranked No 71, beat South African wildcard Kevin Anderson (6-4, 6-7 (1), 6-1), Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the No 7 seed (7-5, 6-4) and American Christopher Eubanks, the No 11 seed (6-2, 6-2).
