Monfils and Kyrgios set to team up for doubles at Washington ATP 500
Gaël Monfils and Nick Kyrgios will join forces in doubles at the ATP 500 event in Washington (July 21-27). The pairing promises fireworks, but questions remain over Kyrgios’ physical condition after months away from the tour.

A high-voltage duo is on the menu for the ATP 500 in Washington next week. Gaël Monfils and Nick Kyrgios, two of the sport’s most entertaining and unpredictable players, have committed to playing doubles together at the hard-court event in the U.S. capital.
Monfils, 38, is in decent form after a solid grass-court campaign, highlighted by a win over Ugo Humbert at Wimbledon. Kyrgios, however, has not played a match since the Miami Open in March. The 2022 Wimbledon finalist will return to singles action in Washington using a protected ranking.
The announcement was made by the tournament via social media, and Kyrgios himself responded on Instagram: “This is Iconic.” The organisers added: “Built for prime time.”
While the partnership promises plenty of flair and crowd appeal, there is reason to be cautious. Kyrgios has withdrawn from multiple events in recent months, including Indian Wells, Roland-Garros, Stuttgart and Wimbledon. Whether he actually takes to the court remains to be seen.
Washington fans can also look forward to another electric doubles team: Frances Tiafoe and Ben Shelton will also play together, giving the draw even more American flavour and explosive potential.
For all four players, it’s a valuable chance to gain rhythm on hard courts ahead of the North American swing, which leads into the Toronto Masters (starting August 5) and the US Open (August 26).
