Gasquet topples Musetti at Winston-Salem

Frenchman Richard Gasquet won against Italian Lorenzo Musetti, the No 5 seed, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-1 to advance to the last 16 of the Winston-Salem Open at Wake Forest Tennis Complex on Tuesday evening.

In a first-time battle between two of the more stylish one-handed backhands on tour, the 36-year-old Frenchman hit 30 winners against 21 unforced errors and saved seven of nine break points.

Gasquet improves to 16-13 on the season while Musetti falls to 19-19.

Gasquet, ranked No 91, will face the winner of the match between Spaniard Pedro Martinez, the No 12 seed, and American Steve Johnson next.

In the previous round of the Winston-Salem, the 36-year-old Frenchman benefited from the abandonment of Pole Kamil Majchrzak (6-7 (5), 6-2, 1-0).
