Coco Gauff stretches Grand Slam winning streak with win over Schmiedlova

Coco Gauff’s first match at a major since becoming a Grand Slam champion was a resounding success. The No 4 seed cruised past Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 6-3, 6-0 in 60 blink-and-you-missed-it minutes to lock down her eighth consecutive Grand Slam match win.

Gauff, ranked No 4, won the final nine games to improve to 8-4 lifetime at the Australian Open, and 45-16 lifetime at the majors. She will face American Caroline Dolehide next.

“I was a little nervous in the first set,” Gauff admitted on court after improving to 3-0 lifetime against the Slovakian. “I think I did well returning and then I found my serve towards the end, in the second set. I’m happy with how I was able to manage my emotions today.”

Gauff said she didn’t feel any extra pressure or nerves due to the fact that she was playing a match at a major as a Grand Slam champion for the first time. In fact, the 19-year-old said that the US Open title run has given her more confidence.

“I think I’m always nervous in the first round of Slams,” she said. “That gave me more confidence today. My first round at the US Open was a tough first round, and I knew that I could get through those tough moments in the match and I think that’s when I was able to buckle down, at 3-all, and pretty much take off from there.”
