Dane Holger Rune, the No 9 seed, defeated American Maxime Cressy 7-5, 6-4, 6-4 to reach the third round of the Australian Open at Melbourne Park on Thursday night. Rune, ranked No 10, will face Frenchman Ugo Humbert next.

“Playing Cressy, who is playing very short rallies, doing serve and volley all the time, it was tough to find the rhythm” said Rune after the victory. “Before the match, I kind of knew it. I was expecting it. I was ready for it. I super happy how I managed everything today, incuding the conditions that was much colder. I felt better and better throughout the match. I’m feeling positive.”

The 19-year-old Dane didn’t lose a set in two matches. He won against Serb Filip Krajinovic (6-2, 6-3, 6-4) in the previous round.
