American qualifier Volynets stuns Kudermetova to reach round 3

American qualifier Katie Volynets moved into the third round of the Australian Open by defeating Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the No 9 seed, 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at Melbourne Park on Thursday night.

The 21-year-old Volynets, a Northern California native, had never faced a top-10 player prior to today’s clash with Kudermetova.

“I literally have the chills because the fans here are just incredible,” she said. “I’ve never played in a packed stadium this packed, and that many people keeping the energy up for me, so that’s awesome.

“Suddenly when you get match point it’s like ‘Oh, wow, I have match point against number nine in the world. I was trying to take deep breaths and to keep going for it on the match points and leaving the rest up to whatever’s meant to happen.”Volynets, ranked No 113, will play the winner of the match between Chinese Shuai Zhang, the No 23 seed, and Croat Petra Martic next.

The 21-year-old Volynets won against Russian Evgeniya Rodina (6-3, 6-2) ahead of her victory.

In the previous round, Kudermetova, ranked No 9, beat Belgian Maryna Zanevska (6-2, 7-6 (4)).
