Sinner secured qualification for the ATP Finals semifinals as the top player in the Borg group, a fact already confirmed before Friday’s final round-robin match against Shelton. The American had already been eliminated after losses to Zverev and Auger-Aliassime.
Friday afternoon’s match – scheduled to preserve Sinner’s freshness ahead of a semifinal rematch – was a demonstration of the Italian’s dominance. Turin’s crowd fully supports Sinner in his bid to retain the title. Sinner showed remarkable resilience, saving the sole break point he faced and extending his unbeaten streak at the ATP Finals and on tour to eight consecutive matches without dropping a set.
The Italian broke Shelton twice, once in the opening game of the first set and again to clinch it at 5-3. The second set saw no breaks, with Shelton even saving a match point at 5-4. Sinner used this match to fine-tune his net play and touch, ultimately conceding no opportunities to his opponent.
Sinner will face Alex de Minaur in Saturday’s semifinal at 2:30 PM local time in Turin.
