Sinner books spot in ATP Finals semis – ruthless once again on key points, this time against Zverev

Jannik Sinner has become the first player to qualify for the semi-finals of the ATP Finals after a commanding 6-4, 6-3 win over Alexander Zverev on Wednesday night in Turin. The Italian, who also benefited from Félix Auger-Aliassime’s earlier victory over Ben Shelton, remains unstoppable indoors.

That’s now 28 consecutive indoor wins — and seven straight victories at the ATP Finals without dropping a set. Sinner continues to produce breathtaking tennis to close out his 2025 season, his clean, explosive ball striking amplified by the Turin indoor conditions.

Backed by an adoring home crowd, the world No. 2 never really gave Zverev a chance to believe, even though the German carved out seven break points – a rare event against Sinner these days. The win was less brutal than his 6-0, 6-1 demolition of Zverev in Paris, but far more controlled than their tense Vienna final (3-6, 6-3, 7-5).

“The score was 6-4, 6-3, but in my opinion, my humble opinion, I felt like the match was closer than the score maybe says”, Zverev said. ‘I thought it was a very high-level match. Especially from the baseline we played very well.

Zverev : “Seven break points, seven first serves”

“The biggest difference was how he was serving on the break points”, Zverev added. “I had more break points than him. I felt very good from the baseline, actually better than in Vienna almost, when we were in the rally. He had two chances to break me, and he used both of them. I had (seven) chances, and I didn’t use any.”

“Sometimes when he’s serving like this, it’s even more difficult because, as you said, seven break points, seven first serves, not even in the rally at all. I think I made one return. He hit a forehand winner. Difficult like this.”

“Yes, it was a very, very close match”, Sinner said. “He had break chances in the first and second set, where I served very well. He changed couple of things tactically. I was ready at times, so I’m happy how I handled the situation. Very happy how I handled the important moments, serving very well. Fortunately I managed to break couple of times. It was a great performance from both sides.”

This score also marks Sinner’s third consecutive semi-final appearance at the ATP Finals — an impressive show of consistency on the sport’s biggest indoor stage. The second semi-final spot from this group will be decided on Friday, when Auger-Aliassime faces Zverev in what promises to be a genuine quarter-final clash. For Ben Shelton, however, the adventure in Turin is effectively over.
