Emma Navarro, Paula Badosa and Tommy Paul have all withdrawn from the “new” US Open mixed doubles that will happen next week. This leads to updates and a form of uncertaincy about the final roster.
“Each of their original partners – Jannik Sinner, Jack Draper and Jessica Pegula, respectively – are allowed to repair up until 2 p.m. on Sunday, August 17, and maintain direct entry dependent on their combined team singles ranking, as of the entry deadline on July 28, with their new partner”, the US Open wrote in a statement on Saturday.
Special rules
Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper have repaired together. “Because of their combined singles ranking of 9 at the entry deadline, they have received direct entry into the draw”, the tournament say. This leas to a direct entry for Jasmine Paolini and Lorenzo Musetti.
The 2025 US Open Mixed Doubles event features a radically new format designed to add excitement and streamline the competition. Only 16 teams compete—8 based on combined singles rankings and 8 wild cards.
Matches before the final are best-of-three sets with short sets played to four games, no-ad scoring (the next point after deuce wins the game), and a 10-point match tiebreak replacing a full third set if sets are split. The final uses a traditional best-of-three sets format with sets up to six games, still with no-ad scoring and a 10-point tiebreak if needed. Prize money is $1 million for the winners.
