This is an even harder blow for Lorenzo Musetti than the one he absorbed the day before – if such a thing was possible. The Italian has withdrawn from Roland-Garros and from the Hamburg Open. The 24-year-old Italian made the announcement on social media on Wednesday, two days after losing to Casper Ruud in the round of 16 in Rome — a match he had played, by his own description, “on one leg.”
“After yesterday’s match, I underwent medical examinations which revealed a rectus femoris injury, requiring several weeks of rest and recovery,” Musetti wrote on Instagram. “Unfortunately, this means I won’t be able to compete in Hamburg and Roland Garros, news that is incredibly hard to take. A huge thank you to the Rome crowd for your incredible support: that’s exactly why, despite not being 100%, I chose to step on court and give everything I had in my home tournament. I’ll keep you updated.”
Outside the Top 15
The diagnosis confirms what his press-conference framing on Tuesday had already begun to suggest. Musetti described his season as “foggy” after the Ruud loss, said he was no longer planning past Paris, and admitted he had been afraid to put weight on his left leg from the second game onwards. The cruelty of the timing – he is now set to drop out of the world’s top 10 on Monday, having entered it after his Roland-Garros semi-final last year – is now compounded by the absence from Paris itself.
The 2026 season has been defined by injuries. Musetti retired from his Australian Open quarter-final against Novak Djokovic in January with a psoas problem while leading 6-4, 6-3, 1-3. He withdrew from Miami in March with a right arm issue. He lost in the first round of Monte-Carlo to Valentin Vacherot. Barcelona produced a quarter-final, Madrid a round of 16, and Rome – until Tuesday – looked like the moment the body had finally cooperated.
Six months after playing the ATP Finals in Turin, Musetti is now set to drop the 300 points from his 2025 Rome semi-final and the 800 points from his 2025 Roland-Garros semi-final from his ranking. This combined 1,100-point loss that will push him outside the world’s top 15 by mid-June.
