Paula Badosa showed on Monday that her clay court season, disrupted by injuries, has not significantly affected her level of play. The Australian Open semi-finalist and 10th seed overcame world No 49 Naomi Osaka 6-7 (1), 6-1, 6-4 at Roland-Garros, despite Osaka having a promising clay season (7 wins, 3 losses) that had raised her ambitions.

“I’m very happy with the level of play,” said the Spaniard in an interview with Marion Bartoli on Philippe-Chatrier. After a very limited preparation, she had admitted over the weekend that she had no idea what to expect. Technically, this was her first win on clay this season, as she had only played two matches, one of which she completed.

The difference between the two was minimal, with both displaying fairly similar match stats. The turning point came in the backhand exchanges, where Osaka’s 20 unforced errors in backhand (53 overall) weighed heavily—particularly on Badosa’s break point, which proved decisive in the third set at 4-3.

Between two strong servers, Badosa’s serve held up better. Osaka struggled with her second serve (converting only 39% over the match), while the Spaniard held her nerve at 5-4 in the third set, sealing the match with two aces and a service winner.

Osaka called for the trainer after the first set, but there’s no clear indication at this stage that an injury impaired her performance. The Japanese player will mostly reflect on her inability to maintain her break advantage in the third set—she was up 2-0 and at 30-30 on her own serve.

“I respect her a lot, I love her tennis, and I always wanted to play her one day,” said Badosa, noting that the two 27-year-olds had never faced each other before. “It just wasn’t easy to play her in the first round.”
Badosa, currently ranked 10th in the world, will face the winner of the match between Romania’s Elena-Gabriela Ruse and American McCartney Kessler in the second round of the French Open.
