Canada’s Leylah Fernandez, the No 17 seed, scored a hard-fought battle between two North American youngsters, defeating Amanda Anisimova in three sets to reach the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in Paris on Sunday.

The left-hander, who reached the US Open final in September, was quick off the blocks, setting up a 5-1 lead. Anisimova who reached the semis in Paris in 2019, cut the lead to 5-3 but Fernandez held in the ninth game to win the first set 6-3.

In the second set, it was Anisimova who started strong, going up 4-1. Leylah Fernandez gritted her way back to 5-4 and held two game points to make it 5-5 but Anisimova broke to win the second set 6-4.

Both players played each other close in the first half of the final set. But Fernandez broke first in the decider to lead 4-2. The Canadian broke again in the ninth game, coming out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 on Court Philippe Chatrier in one hour and 54 minutes. The win improves Fernandez’s record against Anisimova to 2-0.

Fernandez’s win sets up a quarter-final clash against 59th ranked Martina Trevisan, who scored a 7-6, 7-5 win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich earlier on Sunday. This will be the Canadian’s first WTA-level quarter-final on clay.

Tuesday’s quarter-final clash will be the first career meeting between Fernandez and Trevisan.
