Roland-Garros: Raducanu battles past Wang to set up second-round clash with Swiatek

Emma Raducanu advanced to the second round of Roland-Garros by beating Chinese Xinyu Wang 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 at Roland-Garros in Paris.

It was a hard-fought win for the Briton, who has recorded just her second victory in only three career matches at Roland-Garros, having missed both of the previous two editions of the tournament.

After taking the first with three breaks, of serve, Raducanu then found herself 5-1 down as her energy levels dipped and Wang took full advantage to race into a commanding lead.

The 2021 US Open champion fought well to pull the score back to 5-4 with two breaks of serve as Wang had served for the set, but she was broken again in the tenth game as her opponent forced a deserved decider.

It was Raducanu who had the edge in that third stanza. Despite being broken at 5-2 as she served for the match, the Briton – whose returning had been formidable throughout the encounter – struck right back to seal safe passage into round two.

Raducanu, ranked No 41, will face three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek in a highly-anticipated second-round clash.
