Italian Jannik Sinner, the No 11 seed, moved into the last 16 of the French Open by winning against American Mackenzie McDonald 6-3, 7-6 [6], 6-3 at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris on Saturday.

Sinner, ranked No 12, will face the winner of the next match between Russian Andrey Rublev, the No 7 seed, and Chilean Cristian Garin next.

Jannik Sinner is reaching the Fourth Round at the Roland Garros for the third consecutive season. The only one who was able to stop him in 2020 and 2021 was Rafael Nadal.

Sinner reliable on the big stage

The young Italian, aged 20, confirms his reliability on the big stage. Sinner has only lost one main draw match in Grand Slam tournaments against a player ranked lower than him (versus Marton Fucsovics in Wimbledon 2021). Earlier in the tournament, he defeated American qualifier Bjorn Fratangelo (6-3, 6-2, 6-3) and Spaniard Roberto Carballes-Baena (3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3).

McDonald, ranked No 60, edged out Italian lucky loser Franco Agamenone (1-6, 6-2, 6-3, 7-6 [3]) and won against Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, the No 22 seed (6-3, 6-1, 6-4) in the previous rounds of the French Open. He was stopped at the third round of a major tournament for the third time in his career.
