German Alexander Zverev, the No 3 seed, advanced to the last eight of Roland-Garros by winning against Spaniard qualifier Bernabe Zapata Miralles 7-6 [11], 7-5, 6-3 at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris on Sunday.
Zverev, ranked No 3, will play the winner of the next match between Russian Karen Khachanov, the No 21 seed, and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, the No 6 seed, next.
The German defeated Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner (6-2, 6-4, 6-4), Argentinian Sebastian Baez (2-6, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 7-5) and American Brandon Nakashima (7-6 [2], 6-3, 7-6 [5]) in the previous rounds.
Zapata Miralles, ranked No 131, made it through qualifying against Israeli Dudi Sela (6-3, 6-0), Portuguese Gastao Elias (6-1, 6-1) and Italian Luca Nardi (3-6, 6-4, 6-1) before a trio of Americans in the main draw – wildcard Michael Mmoh (7-6 [7], 6-3, 7-5), Taylor Fritz, the No 13 seed (3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3) and John Isner, the No 23 seed (6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-7 [5], 6-3).
