Djokovic started off the season on the hard courts playing the big server Kevin Anderson and he was forced into two tiebreaks. However, it’s the Serb who showed his quality in the deciders to start with a win over the 147th-ranked South African.

2020 ATP Cup round robin – Djokovic d. Monfils 6-3, 6-2
Djokovic outclassed then world No 9 Gael Monfils in this match, grabbing a quick 6-3, 6-2 win against the Frenchman. A break in the first secured the set, and the Serb won four straight games to grab the second to improve to 16-0 in his career against Monfils.

2020 ATP Cup quarter-final – Djokovic d. Shapovalov 4-6, 6-1, 7-6(4)
Denis Shapovalov was the first to give Novak trouble, with the young, hard-hitting Canadian southpaw winning the first set and forcing a tiebreak in the third. In the end, it was Djokovic who came out on top over the world No 14.

2020 ATP Cup semi-final – Djokovic d. Medvedev 6-1, 5-7, 6-4
Another three-setter, as this time it was against the 2019 US Open finalist and the fifth-ranked player in the world Daniil Medvedev. Djokovic bounced back against the Russian after allowing the late break in the second to book a final match-up.

Djokovic led Serbia to the ATP Cup title, defeating then-world No 1 Rafael Nadal in straight sets in the final after having to go three in the previous knockout matches to prevail for team Serbia in the collective competition.

Australian Open first round – Djokovic d. Struff 7-6(5), 6-2, 2-6, 6-1
The first round was one of the closer matches at the Australian Open for Djokovic up until the final. Jan-Lennard Struff forced a tiebreak and took a set from the reigning champ, but that was not enough for the German, who was ranked No 37 in the world at the time.

The second round saw a more normal early-round result for Djokovic. He knocked off the world No 146 Japanese Tatsuma Ito, who entered the draw as a wildcard, swiftly in 96 minutes.

World No 5 Dominic Thiem pushed Djokovic to the absolute brink in this match, snatching two sets from the then 16-time Grand Slam winner. However, history repeated itself as Novak hung on after finding crucial breaks against the Austrian for his 17th major, and his record eighth title in Australia.

Things got close this time against Monfils. The Frenchman had three match points in the second set tiebreak, but failed to convert any of them. He lost steam toward the third and Djokovic finished the comeback. After losing to Novak for the 17th time in his career, Monfils said “I can’t beat you my friend, but always a big pleasure to play against you. You are a big champion in many ways and you showed it again tonight,” on his social media.

Dubai Open final – Djokovic d. Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4
Djokovic’s second title of the year came against another young gun in world No 6 Stefanos Tsitsipas. He found late breaks in both sets to knock off the Greek for the victory. It was after this match when he revealed his ambitions to go undefeated in 2020 and that he’s definitely not kidding.

After a six-month hiatus in competitive play and the Adria Tour controversy, Djokovic made his comeback in New York City. Not the cleanest of wins but the 4-3 advantage in breaks carried him to a win against Lithuanian qualifier Ricardas Berankis.

Schwartzman again for Novak and he had to come back from down 3-0 in the first. However, Djokovic secured late breaks in each set to put away Schwartzman, who defeated Nadal earlier in the tournament, for his fourth title of the year.
