US Open Day 3 Highlights: Sinner, Swiatek ease into second round as Gauff struggles
The top seeds and title contenders all moved into the next round of the US Open on an action-packed Day 3

Tuesday saw the completion of first round action with some of the top favourites on the men’s and women’s side kicking off their campaigns.
Sinner, Zverev advance in straight sets
Top seed Jannik Sinner, who will battle rival Carlos Alcaraz for the title and the world No 1 ranking over the next fortnight. began his bid for a fifth Grand Slam title with a comfortable 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 win over Vit Kopriva.
Third seed Alexander Zverev, who is in the same half as Sinner, also made a winning start with a 6-2, 7-6, 6-4 win over Alejandro Tabilo under the lights.
Gauff, Swiatek score contrasting wins
2023 US Open champion Coco Gauff, playing with a new coaching team, had a wobbly start but managed to eke out a three set win over Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-7, 7-5. World No 2 and reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek had a more straight forward passage into the second round, beating Emiliana Arango 6-1, 6-2.
