Britain’s Evans too good for Vesely in US Open opener at Flushing Meadows

Daniel Evans beat Czech Jiri Vesely 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 to move into the second round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Tuesday evening.

The No 20 seed, ranked No 23, will play the winner of the match between James Duckworth and Christopher O’Connell next.

Vesely beat Novak Djokovic on hard courts earlier this year but he had no answer to the play of Evans, who is trying to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final.
