US Open: Tsitsipas upset by Colombian qualifier Galan brings No 1 race down to four

Daniel Elahi Galan needed seven match points but finally knocked out fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas to score the biggest win of his career at the US Open on Monday night

Colombian qualifier Daniel Elahi Galan scored the biggest upset of Day 1 at the 2022 US Open with a four-set shock win over fourth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Monday night.

Galan, ranked No 94 in the world, got off to a very fast start winning the first 11 games of the match before the Greek finally got on the scoreboard. After losing the first two sets 6-0, 6-1, Tsitsipas rallied to win the third set 6-3and went up 2-0 and 4-2 in the fourth set.

But Galan fought back to prevail 6-0, 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 in two hours and 49 minutes finally converting his ninth match point.

The loss ends Tsitsipas’ chances of becoming world No 1 at the end of the US Open. The Greek player needed to reach the final to have a chance to become No 1 after two weeks. This brings the race for the world No 1 ranking after the US Open down to four players – Daniil Medvedev, Rafael Nadal, Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud.

Galan will next meet Australian Jordan Thompson in the second round. The Colombian was making his main draw debut at the US Open, having reached the third round at Roland-Garros in 2020 and Wimbledon a few months ago.
