US Open: Qualifier Holt upsets top-ranked American Fritz to reach second round

Qualifier Brandon Holt reached the second round of the US Open by edging out No 10 seed Taylor Fritz 6-7 (3), 7-6 (1), 6-3, 6-4 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Monday night.

Fritz, seeded No 10, is the top-ranked American player in the world and had won the Indian Wells Masters Series title on hard courts earlier in the year.

Holt, ranked No 303 and the son of former US Open women’s singles champion Tracy Austin, will play Argentina’s Pedro Cachin in the second round. Cachin defeated Slovenian Aljaz Bedene in a fifth set tiebreaker, also on Monday.
