Seventh seed Cameron Norrie beat Portuguese João Sousa 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (4) to advance to the third round of the US Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City on Thursday.

The ninth seed produced a typically consistent performance from the baseline to secure victory, setting up a clash with Dane Holger Rune, the No 28 seed, next.

Norrie’s win means that Britain has four men – Andy Murray, Dan Evans and Jack Draper are the others – into the third round of the US Open for the first time in the Open era.

“I think it’s very cool and I like that,” Norrie said of the statistic. “I think on the back of it, there’s a whole group of guys kind of coming through, kind of younger than Jack, Jack’s age, that have a lot of potential as well.

“It’s not just us guys. There’s guys just at the level just below. There’s going to be a lot of other names coming up, as well.”

In the previous round, Norrie defeated Frenchman Benoit Paire (6-0, 7-6 (1), 6-0).

Sousa, ranked No 59, beat American Mackenzie McDonald (1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (4), 6-3) in the first round.
