Norwegian Casper Ruud, the No 12 seed, reached the second round of the 2025 US Open on Monday by beating Austrian Sebastian Ofner 6-1, 6-2, 7-6 (5) at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Ruud cruised through the first and second sets but Ofner made his presence felt in the third to force a tiebreaker, where the former closed it out by the narrowest of margins.

In the nearly two-hour-long outing, the Norwegian hit nine aces, 21 winners and converted four break points, while keeping his serve intact throughout.

More than his tennis, Ruud benefited from his opponent’s on Monday as Ofner made 43 unforced errors.

“It was a good match for me,” Ruud said after the win. “He was struggling a bit in the first two sets and I got a lot of free points. I was playing good, as aggressive as I could, but also making a lot of balls in. He was doing some errors and then in the third set, he upped his level. It was difficult for me to stay in the rally. Tiebreak was really close, bit up and down but really happy to get it in the end.”

This marked Ruud’s 15th straight win in the first rounds of the Grand Slams, as he continued:

“Every Slam match is a big match. Every player is a Grand Slam is a great player, great opponent, no matter what round you play. So, first rounds can be somewhat tricky. You have to be prepared for a tough match, no matter what. It’s a nice feeling getting past the first round and let’s see if I can build some momentum.”

Ruud, ranked No 12, will face Belgian Raphael Collignon next.
