American Ben Shelton reached the third round of the US Open when Austrian Dominic Thiem retired on Wednesday afternoon at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York.

Shelton, ranked No 47, led 7-6 (1), 1-0 when Thiem, ranked No 81, pulled out of the match with a stomach-related issue. The Austrian had vomited prior to the match, and was showing signs of discomfort between ends, having spoken with the physio already.

“I did a lot of things well today” – Shelton

Despite the limited time on court, Shelton said he was happy with his game on Wednesday. “I think I can take a lot of confidence based off how I was playing in the first set, how the first set went, because for the majority of it, pretty much the whole set, I didn’t notice any difference or dips in play. I thought that I was playing my game and I was playing well. I did a lot of things well today. I felt like I’ve built well off of my last match, the way I was playing two days ago. Yeah, so I think I’m happy with the way that I competed throughout the set. It’s always unfortunate when you have a match cut short. But the upside is that I’ll be more rested than having a five-hour battle come two days from now.”

The 20-year-old American will face Russian Aslan Karatsev next, who blasted his way past Carballes Baena with 83 winners earlier today.

In the previous round of the US Open, Ben Shelton edged out Argentinian Pedro Cachin (1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4). Thiem, on the other hand, won against Kazakh Alexander Bublik, the No 25 seed (6-3, 6-2, 6-4) in the first round of the Flushing Meadows tournament.
