Third seeds Iga Swiatek, of Poland, and Casper Ruud, of Norway, will take on defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, both from Italy, in the final of the US Open mixed doubles event on Wednesday.

Swiatek/ Ruud were the first to advance to the championship round after a thrilling 3-5, 5-3, 10-8 win over top seeds Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper. Swiatek/ Ruud trailed 8-4 in the match tiebreak but won six points in a row to win the match after the Pole hit a winning volley, which she called ‘the most important volley of her career’ in the post-match on-court interview.

This was the first match of the revamped mixed doubles event that went into a match tiebreak.

In the second semi-final, defending champions Errani/ Vavassori, who only made it to the main draw after some top singles players pulled out, continued to carry the torch for doubles specialists with a 4-2, 4-2 win over the American duo Danielle Collins/ Christian Harrison.

The final will be played on Wednesday evening itself with the winning team taking home a million-dollar pay cheque.
