China’s qualifier Yibing Wu continued his impressive run of form in recent weeks by scoring his 15th win in a row on Wednesday to defeat fellow qualifier Nuno Borges in five sets and advance to the third round of the US Open in New York.

Wu came from two sets to one down to beat Portugal’s Nuno Borges 6-7 (3), 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to improve to 32-4 for the season.

Yibing Wu is breaking new ground for Chinese men’s tennis on the international stage

He had earlier defeated 31st seeded Nikoloz Basilashvili, of Georgia, (6-3, 6-4, 6-0) in the opening round at Flushing Meadows. That made him the first Chinese male player to win a match at the US Open in the Open Era and the first to win a Grand Slam match in over six decades.

The Chinese player won back-to-back ATP Challengers in July and then won three matches in qualifying before his two main draw wins this week.

The 22-year-old Wu won the junior boys singles and doubles title at the US Open in 2017 to become the first Chinese man to win a Grand Slam title of any kind and also topped the ITF world junior rankings soon thereafter.

The win sets up a clash against world No 1 and defending champion Daniil Medvedev, who scored a straight sets win over Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech in the night match on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
