Muguruza has won only one match in three Grand Slam events in 2022
Former Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza crashed out of the first round of the Wimbledon Championships, going down to Belgium’s Greet Minnen in straight sets in London on Wednesday.
Minnen, ranked No 88 in the world, got off to a strong start to lead 5-2 in the first set. Muguruza, who won the title at SW19 in 2017, fought back to 5-4 and had two chances to level the set at 5-5. But Minnen broke again in the 10th game to win the set 6-4.
The 24-year-old Belgian then swept through the second set without dropping a game to win 6-4, 6-0 in one hour and one minute.
Muguruza was undone by 33 unforced errors in the match, as compared to just 9 winners while Minnen hit 15 winners to go with 14 unforced errors in the match.
Minnen will next meet China’s Qinwen Zheng, who scored a 7-6, 7-5 win over American Sloane Stephens.
