Wimbledon: Davidovich Fokina sets up third round clash against Fritz

Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the No 26 seed, moved into the third round of Wimbledon by edging out Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) on Thursday afternoon.

Davidovich Fokina, ranked No 27, will face American Taylor Fritz, the No 5 seed, next at the All England Club in London. This is the second time in four main draw appearances that the Spaniard is into the third round here and he will be looking to make the last 16 for the first time.

Davidovich Fokina holds a 3-2 edge in head-to-head over Fritz but the American has won their only meeting on grass – which came last month in Eastbourne.

Ahead of his win today, the Spaniard beat American Brandon Holt (6-2, 6-4, 7-5).

Van De Zandschulp, ranked No 92, won against Italian Matteo Arnaldi (7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), 6-4) in the previous round of the tournament.
