Wimbledon: Fritz is the fourth American male player into last 16, best total for the USA since 1999

American Taylor Fritz, the No 11 seed, won against Slovak Alex Molcan 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 (3) to move into the last 16 of Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Saturday afternoon. Fritz, ranked No 14, will face Australian qualifier Jason Murray Kubler next.

He joins a group of Americans – also Tommy Paul, Brandon Nakashima and Frances Tiafoe – that is the first American quartet to reach the second week of Wimbledon since 1999.

Brandon Nakashima won against Daniel Elahi Galan Riveros (6-4, 6-4, 6-1) on Saturday. Tommy Paul had beaten Jiri Vesely (6-3, 6-2, 6-2) and Frances Tiafoe had beaten Alexander Bublik (3-6, 7-6 (1), 7-6 (3), 6)4) on Friday.

The last American quartet to reach the second week at Wimbledon included Andre Agassi, Jim Courier, Todd Martin and Pete Sampras.

This year marks the first time that four Americans have reached the round of 16 at any Slam since the 2011 US Open, when Mardy Fish, John Isner, Andy Roddick and Donald Young all made it through.
