Laura Siegemund ended the run of lucky loser Solana Sierra 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.

Sierra had already made history by reaching the last 16 at SW19, becoming the first lucky loser to do so in Open Era history.

But she fell to a solid performance from the 104th-ranked German, with Siegemund running out a comfortable winner, converting five break points compared to the Argentine’s one to move deservedly into the quarter-finals.

Siegemund, meanwhile, has created a slice of history of her own. At 37 years and 118 days old, she is the oldest player to reach a maiden women’s singles quarter-final at Wimbledon in the Open Era.

“I’m a fighter,” Siegemund said after the win.

“If you are ready to accept a good match and lose, then you are ready to win. So that’s what I’m trying to remember in the big moments.”

Siegemund, ranked No 104, will face the winner of the match between Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, the top seed, and Belgian Elise Mertens, the No 24 seed, next.

Ahead of her victory, the 37-year-old German defeated American Madison Keys, the No 6 seed (6-3, 6-3), Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the No 29 seed (6-2, 6-3) and American Peyton Stearns (6-4, 6-2).

Sierra, ranked No 101, won against Spaniard Cristina Bucsa (7-5, 1-6, 6-1), Englishwoman Katie Boulter (6-7 (7), 6-2, 6-1) and Australian Olivia Gadecki (6-2, 7-6 (8)) earlier in the tournament.
