Slovenian Polona Hercog beat Ukrainian Valeriya Strakhova 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the Argentina Open at the Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club on Wednesday evening.
Hercog, ranked No 292, will play the winner of the match between Romanian Miriam Bulgaru and Argentinian Julia Riera, the No 7 seed, next.
The Slovenian benefited from the abandonment of Frenchwoman Carole Monnet, the No 9 seed (6-4, 0-2) in the previous round of the Argentinian tournament.
In the previous round of the Argentinian tournament, Strakhova, ranked No 280, benefited from the abandonment of Argentinian wildcard Guillermina Naya (7-5, 5-7, 2-1).
